Father Crites Farewell Luncheon

We at Epiphany said goodbye to long time Rector Father William Crites who is retiring. The Church gave him an apple tree of his choice to be delivered and planted in his yard. The good thing is, Father Crites is not leaving Amherst. He will continue to be a part of our Parrish after visiting other local Parishes for a few months to allow Father Kevin Spaeth to settle in at Epiphany.
A farewell luncheon was held in Father Crites honor and as usual our Anglicans came through with lots of great food. We know how to do Pot Luck!
After attacking the food tables....
...we chowed down.
There were so many well wishers present that some had to sit in the kitchen.
It was a sad, but yet promising day for all.

August at Epiphany

Father Crites surgery was very successful. He is back conducting 10am Sunday services at Epiphany on our summer schedule. His final Sunday as our Priest will be August 21st and a farewell dinner will follow the service.
Our new Priest, Father Kevin Spaeth will arrive in Amherst August 23rd and his first service at Epiphany will be Holy Communion at 10am Sunday August 28th.
Beginning the first Sunday in September, the Church of the Epiphany will return to our more traditional Sunday service times, including Early Communion each Sunday at 9am, and Holy Communion at 11am on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sunday's, Morning Prayer at 11am the 2nd and 4th Sunday's.

Father Crites is having Knee surgery in late June and will not be available for services during July. 10 O'clock Sunday services during July will be as follows:

Morning Prayer: 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays

Holy Communion: 2nd Sunday, July 10th

Spring Parish Picnic

Our Spring Parish Picnic this year was also the venue for the parish to congratulate Andy Jordan, the first recipient of the Taylor Miller Scholarship.

Andy , who is from Amherst, will attend Longwood University this fall after graduating from Amherst County High School in a few weeks.

After he received the award, Andy read his essay on Taylor that was part of the Scholarship application. It was a very moving tribute to Taylor.

New Sunday Church Hours begin Sunday May1st

Beginning May 1, 2011 Church of the Epiphany's Sunday Worship Services will all be at 10:00am and be conducted as follows:

1st Sunday: Morning Prayer with Communion

2nd Sunday: Communion

3rd Sunday: Morning Prayer with Communion

4th Sunday: Communion

5th Sunday: Communion

We will combine the 9 and 11 o'clock Services for the summer, having one service at 10:00am.

Morning Prayer with Communion will consist of an abbreviated Morning Prayer followed by the Sermon and Holy Communion.

Communion will be the regular Communion Service.

After the 11:00 service, and before our Annual Meeting we gathered everyone together for a group photo in front of the Epiphany Alter. After the picture and the meeting we all enjoyed a Pot Luck Dinner in the Undercroft.

Bazaar 2010!

The Ladies of the Church of the Epiphany held their annual Christmas Bazaar on a beautiful Saturday, Nov. 20th.

Inside there was a host of donated items for sale, plus baked goods. At the back Helen Lewis and Dorothea Fuller stand ready to help the shoppers.

And shoppers there were. A steady stream of visitors took advantage of the many bargains.

Some more of our staff of ladies, Left to right, Evi Kirkman, Lucinda Jewell, Anne Keeney, and Bonnie Gooding. Behind them, the kitchen with soups and other goodies hot off the stove also for sale.

Check out could get hectic at times but the ladies had it under control.

Pictures of the Taylor Miller Funeral at Arlington National Cemetery

On June 21st PFC Taylor Miller was killed in Afghanistan by a suicide bomber. Taylor was a member of The Church of the Epiphany, and a number of our members drove to Arlington to attend his funeral at Arlington National Cemetery. Before the funeral Taylor's parents were presented two medals Taylor had been awarded by the U.S. Army posthumously, The Purple Heart, and The Bronze Star.

Here the casket has been placed on the horse drawn Caisson, and is being moved to the burial site.

The Honor Guard then carried the casket to the site for the funeral conducted by Epiphany's Farther William Crites.

After the service Defense Secretary Robert Gates offers condolences to Taylor's parents and sister. Gates was joined at the service by our Rep. Robert Goodlatte, Rep. Scott Murphy of New York and two soldiers who were injured in the same bomb blast that killed Taylor.

Pool Party 2010!

Thanks to Bonnie Gooding we had our first (annual?) Pool Party at Winton Country Club Sunday afternoon July 11th. Quite a few of our members and their friends took advantage of the beautiful weather and the wonderful pool at Winton Country Club.
The young adults were there in force. Left to right clockwise are AJ, Colby, Michael S., Aubrey, Shane, and Michael P.

Billy and Elizabeth were in the pool too.

Michael Pierce showed us the art of using the diving board.

There were a number of others on hand to help eat the Pizza, chicken, chips, cake, cookies and brownies...yum. The photographer didn't get any pictures of them because he spent most of his time in the pool.

Everyone at The Church of the Epiphany is excited. Our own Father William C. Crites was the 2010 recipient of The Bishop's Cross at the recent Synod in Natural Bridge, VA. He won for exceptional service in growing 3 parishes and directing the erection of 3 church buildings.
